Land and Transport Ministry officials said there were no planes at Miyazaki Airport in southwestern Japan when the bomb exploded. Due to this a major accident was avoided. Officials said an investigation by the Self-Defense Forces and police confirmed that the explosion was caused by a 500-pound American bomb and that there was no longer any threat. They are finding out what caused the sudden explosion. Video recorded by a nearby aviation school showed chunks of asphalt spurting into the air like fountains from the explosion.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said more than 80 flights at the airport had been canceled and was expected to resume operations by Thursday morning.
