Vikram Misri met Bangladesh's Foreign Advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hussain – Top News Bulletin

Dhaka: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is on a visit to Bangladesh. This is the first high-level visit from India after the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government in August. Soon after reaching Dhaka, Misri held a meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Mohammad Jashimuddin. Misri also met Bangladesh's Foreign Advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hossain. Vikram Misri's tour to Bangladesh is considered very important.

India made its stand clear

“Today's discussions have given both of us an opportunity to take stock of (India-Bangladesh) relations. I look forward to frank and constructive discussions with all my interlocutors,” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said after meeting Bangladesh Foreign Advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hussain. India looks forward to positive, constructive and mutually beneficial relations with Bangladesh.”

Mohammad Yunus will meet

Misri's visit comes amid rising tensions in relations between New Delhi and Dhaka over attacks on minorities, including Hindus, in Bangladesh following Hasina's ouster from power. He is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Mohammad Yunus, head of the interim government of Bangladesh. It is believed that he will raise India's concerns regarding attacks on Hindus with Dhaka.

India-Bangladesh relations are tense

It is noteworthy that in August this year, due to massive anti-government protests, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave the country. Yunus took over the reins of the interim government just days after Hasina took refuge in India. Relations between India and Bangladesh became tense after the developments in the neighboring country. Relations between the two countries have become even more tense after the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of Hindu saint Chinmoy Krishna Das. In the last few weeks, there have been incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities in the neighboring country as well as attacks on temples, over which India has expressed deep concern.
