Its center was about 100 kilometers southwest of Ferndale. The earthquake occurred near the coast of Northern California on December 6 at 12:24 am Indian time. After this a tsunami warning was issued, which was later withdrawn. The National Center for Seismology, while sharing a post on Twitter, wrote, “The intensity of the earthquake was 7.0 magnitude. The earthquake occurred late at night on December 6 near the coast of Northern California.”
The epicenter of the earthquake was 10 kilometers below the ground. The epicenter of the earthquake was near the sea coast and the intensity was also very high. The USGA said the location, depth and faulting mechanisms indicate that the event likely occurred on or near the Mendocino Fracture Zone, a fault zone that strikes east-southeast between the Pacific Plate to the south and the Pacific Plate to the north. The subducting Gorda forms the boundary between the plates.
