Sukabumi: There has been devastation after sudden floods and landslides in the mountainous villages located in Java island of Indonesia. 10 people have died due to landslides while two people are reported missing. Officials have given information about this on Monday. Lieutenant Colonel Yudi Haryanto, head of the rescue command post in Sukabumi, said torrential rains since last week have caused rivers to burst their banks, worsening conditions in more than 170 villages in Sukabumi district in West Java province. A large number of trees have fallen.

Haryanto said landslides, flash floods and strong winds destroyed 172 villages and forced more than 3,000 people to seek shelter in temporary government shelters. Authorities have warned about 1,000 people to evacuate as more than 400 homes are at risk due to the extremely challenging weather. The disaster also destroyed 31 bridges, 81 roads and crops in 539 hectares, while 1,170 houses were inundated up to the rooftops. The local disaster management agency said the bad weather also damaged more than 3,300 other homes and buildings.

Rescue workers retrieved 10 bodies on Monday from the hardest-hit villages of Tegalbulud, Simpanan and Simas, said Lt. Haryanto, head of the rescue command post. Three children were also among the dead. He said rescue workers were searching for two more villagers who were still missing. (AP)
