United Nations: India's stature has increased significantly after being successful in getting permanent membership of the African Union at the G-20 summit in New Delhi last year. The countries of the Global South now trust India the most in the world. In a way, India has now become the voice of the Global South. Therefore, India has called for a concerted global effort to reform the international financial architecture to ensure debt sustainability for the 'Global South' and rescue it from the debt trap, which is affected by multiple crises.
This call by India has dealt the biggest blow to China, because China is considered to be the most expert player in trapping countries from Asia to Africa in the debt trap. But now due to increasing trust in India in the countries of the Global South, they are losing their senses. India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador P Harish was addressing the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday on the theme 'Promoting Resilience and Development in an Uncertain World'. They drew attention to how development gains have been derailed, threatening progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The goal is to trap the Global South in the debt trap.
India's aim is to save the Global South from getting trapped in a new debt trap and focus on bringing stability to those countries. P Harish said, “A concerted global effort is needed to reform the international financial architecture to ensure debt sustainability and prevent debt trap, provide access to affordable finance and address disparities in global trade and investment flows. Harish stressed the need to focus on the issues of the most vulnerable people and said that no one should be left behind.
“Empowering women and youth is the key to building resilient societies,” he said. He highlighted various achievements of India including the benefits of digital technology and how it can be replicated for the developing world. He also listed the steps taken by India to tackle climate change. (Language)
