Colombo: The situation has become dire due to heavy rains in Sri Lanka. Schools in the capital Colombo and suburban areas were declared closed on Monday due to the floods. According to Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Centre, heavy rains over the weekend have wreaked havoc in many parts of the country. Water is visible everywhere in houses, fields, roads. Three people have drowned in the flood, while about 1 lakh 34 thousand people have been affected by it.

Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center said 240 houses were damaged by the rain and floods. About seven thousand people have been evacuated safely. Authorities have cut off power supply in some areas as a precautionary measure. Army personnel, including the Navy, have been deployed to rescue the victims and provide food and other essential items.
