As soon as the new president was elected in Sri Lanka, the spirit of 'Easter Sunday' came out again – Top News Bulletin

Colombo: As soon as the government changed after the presidential election in Sri Lanka, the ghost of 'Easter Sunday' has come to the fore again. For this, the new President Anura Kumara Disanayake said on Tuesday that he will start the investigation of the 'Easter Sunday' terrorist attacks of 2019 again. Let us tell you that Disanayake was appointed the President of the country on Sunday after winning the presidential election held last week. He made this comment during a goodwill conversation on the phone with the head of the Catholic Church, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjit.

Ranjit said, “The new president has assured us that the truth of the 'Easter Sunday' attacks will be brought out.” Ranjit has been a critic of the investigation into the attacks targeting big hotels and churches during Sunday prayers on the occasion of Easter. About 300 people, including foreign nationals, were killed in these attacks. Accusing both former presidents Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe for the incident, Ranjit had criticized the investigation and said that an attempt was made to politically hide the attacks carried out by the local jihadist organization National Thowheed Jamaat (NTJ).

The former president was found guilty in the earlier investigation

In the 'Easter Sunday' case, former President Maithripala Sirisena had formed a high-level investigation committee due to pressure from the church. After this, Sirisena was found guilty in the investigation and he was ordered to pay compensation of 10 crore Saudi Riyals (27,443,756 Indian rupees) to the families of the victims. The top officials of the then Defense Department were also found guilty of criminal negligence for ignoring the prior intelligence warnings given by India. (Language)
