taipei: America has created an uproar in Beijing with one of its decisions regarding Taiwan amid tensions with China. America has announced to provide $2 billion worth of arms to China's enemy Taiwan to strengthen its military base. This has created panic in the Chinese camp. It approved the sale of arms worth two billion dollars, including the supply of advanced surface-to-air missile defense systems. It is believed that China may be angry with this move of America.
Taiwan's presidential office thanked Washington on Saturday for approving the potential arms sale. Taiwan, under the leadership of the island's new President Lai Ching-te, is boosting its defense power as China increases its military capabilities against it. China has been claiming Taiwan. Beijing last week conducted military exercises involving Taiwan for the second time since Lai took office in May.
America wants to strengthen Taiwan
“Strengthening Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities is the foundation of maintaining regional stability,” presidential spokeswoman Karen Kuo said. According to the US State Department's Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, the potential arms sale deal includes three advanced surface-to-air missile systems and related equipment, worth up to $1.16 billion. The deal also includes radar systems worth an estimated $8.28 million. (AP)
