Army personnel deployed under Article 245 of the Constitution will remain in the city from October 5-17 to maintain law and order for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. Pakistan is hosting the SCO summit on October 15-16. The deployment came as supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur reached D-Chowk to participate in the protest.
What is PTI's demand?
Supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf are demanding the release of Imran Khan. Cricketer-turned-political leader Imran Khan refused to postpone the protest despite the government's call. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister's Information Advisor Muhammad Ali Saif told Geo News that army troops have been deployed to deal with the demonstration by Khan's party in the capital. He said that army personnel have been deployed to ensure security during the upcoming SCO summit. (Language)
