Madhya Pradesh: Kamal Nath signals readiness for new role at AICC

Bhopal: Amid growing speculation that the Congress leadership may give him a major responsibility in the AICC, veteran leader and former chief minister Kamal Nath on Friday said he was ready to take up any assignment given to him by the party, “be it at the state or central level”.

“I am a disciplined party worker. I will take up whatever responsibility the party assigns me, be it at the state or central level,” he told reporters.

“I am currently travelling between Bhopal and Delhi,” he said.

However, Mr Nath has refused to reveal what transpired in the meeting between him and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on September 3.

Mr. Nath currently represents the Chhindwara Assembly constituency in Madhya Pradesh.

The meeting between the two leaders gave rise to speculation that he was under pressure from the central leadership to abandon state politics and move into central politics.

There are also rumours in Congress circles that the party's central leadership has offered Mr Nath the post of AICC treasurer.

Congress veteran Ajey Maken currently holds the post of AICC treasurer.

The party here is abuzz with talk that Nath could also be given the responsibility of strengthening the Congress-led INDIA alliance by wooing other like-minded parties for the bloc.

Responding to a question on why the state executive of the party could not be reconstituted despite the announcement made in this regard by state party president Jitu Patwari about six months ago, Mr Nath said it was not an easy task and hence would take some time.

The Congress will be re-elected in four states, including Madhya Pradesh, he said.
