First victim (November 14): Rahul targeted a 19yearold girl at Udvada station. After the rape and murder, he changed his clothes and fled to Vadodara.
Second victim (November 19): While traveling in a handicapped compartment of Katihar Express, he stabbed a 60yearold man, robbed him and returned to Mumbai.
Third victim (24 November): During a visit to Tirupati and Secunderabad, he targeted a disabled woman.
Past crimes: Investigators believe he had also killed a woman while traveling between Pune and Mumbai in October.
Hiding place in Mumbai: Mumbai's Dadar and Bandra stations became a place of refuge for Rahul. The police thoroughly studied the CCTV footage of these stations and tracked Rahul's every move. This footage proved to be most important in catching Rahul.
Story of the arrest: Valsad Crime Branch along with Mumbai, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh police formed a team of more than 100 officers. Rahul was eventually arrested at Vapi railway station. Stolen mobile phones and other items were recovered from him.
Burden of charges: Rahul faces multiple charges including rape, murder, and theft. “Mumbai was the safest place for him. He spent a lot of time at Dadar and Bandra stations,” said a Valsad crime branch official.
