New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has developed a lightweight bulletproof jacket with 360degree protection.
The Defence Ministry said that these jackets, called ABHED (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat), have been developed at the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIACOE) located at IIT, Delhi. The ABHED jackets were developed using polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic materials.
The ministry said, “The design configuration is based on characterisation of various materials at high strain rates, followed by appropriate modelling and simulation in collaboration with DRDO.” All the necessary research and testing has been carried out as per protocol for the jackets.
“These jackets are lighter than the maximum weight limit prescribed by the Indian Army. With a minimum possible weight of 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg for various BIS levels, these modulardesigned jackets provide 360degree protection with front and back armour,” the ministry said.
The ministry said the Centre is ready to transfer its technology to three industries.
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, said, “This lightweight bulletproof jacket exemplifies the effective ecosystem of defence research and development fostered by DRDO, academia and industry.”
DIACoE was formed by revamping DRDO's Joint Centre for Advanced Technology at IIT Delhi in 2022 to involve industry and academia in defence research and development.
It is pursuing various projects on advanced technologies involving DRDO scientists, academic researchers and industry partners.
