Chandigarh:
Olympic wrestler Bajrang Punia, who joined the Congress, received a threatening message on WhatsApp warning him of dire consequences, police said on Sunday.
Bajrang Punia has lodged a complaint at Bahalgarh police station in Sonipat.
A police official said they received a complaint from Bajrang Punia following which they launched an investigation.
Asked whether some reports say that the threat message asked Bajrang Punia to quit the Congress or prepare to face serious consequences, SHO of Bahalgarh police station Madan Singh said, “The matter is under investigation.”
Olympians Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat entered the political arena on Friday by joining the Congress.
The party subsequently fielded Phogat from the Julana seat for the Haryana Assembly elections, while Bajrang Punia was appointed as the working president of the All India Kisan Congress.
Bajrang Punia won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
Voting for 90 seats in Haryana will be held on October 5 and votes will be counted on October 8.
