Self-driving will change China's transportation patterns

BEIJING: China's self-driving industry has grown rapidly over the past decade, driven by ambitions to become a global leader in cutting-edge automotive technology. Key gaps between China and other countries in investment, technology, talent and other aspects of autonomous vehicles and supporting technologies are steadily narrowing. China's self-driving technology and companies have the world's largest auto market, producing half of the world's electric vehicles since 2009, and are already globally competitive.

There is no doubt that the Chinese government is committed to vigorously developing autonomous driving, which is evident from the relevant policies and regulations. Given the current development stage of the technology, record investment levels and ample talent reserves, KPMG research estimates that by 2030, China's major cities will achieve large-scale application of autonomous driving. Autonomous driving is likely to enter the market in the form of online ride-hailing or logistics delivery vehicles in the next decade.

The Internet of Vehicles Industry Innovation Alliance released the “Intelligent Connected Vehicle Technology Roadmap 2.0” in 2020 to provide market guidance for the industry. This roadmap states that by 2025, sales of partially autonomous and conditionally autonomous vehicles will account for more than 50 percent of total vehicle sales. High-level autonomous driving will first be commercialized in specific scenarios and limited areas, and the scope of applications will continue to expand in the future. It is expected that by 2035, various types of high-level autonomous vehicles will become popular in most regions of China.
