New Delhi . The number of public electric vehicle (EV) chargers installed so far in India has crossed 25,000.
In the information given by the government on Friday, it was said that the total number of public EV chargers in the country is 25,202.
Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel Bhupathiraju Srinivas Varma told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that Karnataka stood first with 5,765 public EV charging stations. After this, Maharashtra is at second place with 3,728 stations and Uttar Pradesh is at third place with 1,989 stations.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) is promoting the adoption of electric vehicles in India. On September 29, 2024, the ministry had notified the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM eDrive) scheme to accelerate EV adoption, set up charging infrastructure and promote the development of EV manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
A budget of Rs 10,900 crore has been kept in this scheme for a period of two years. Of the total allocated budget, Rs 2,000 crore has been earmarked for setting up EV public charging stations (EVPCS).
The power ministry also issued “Guidelines for Establishment and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure 2024” on September 17, which outline standards and protocols to create a connected and interoperable EV charging infrastructure network in the country.
Charging infrastructure requirements depend on the composition of electric vehicles, driving patterns, terrain and geography, urbanization patterns, technology of EVs and technology of charging devices.
According to the vehicle portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the total number of registered electric twowheelers in the country as of December 4 is 28,55,015, while the number of electric fourwheelers is 2,57,169.
The EV charging market in the country is estimated to reach $3.7 billion by 2030.
