Musk supports bill to protect against AI technology in California

San Francisco: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday supported California's new bill that provides protection against artificial intelligence.

Let us tell you that this California bill has been named 'SB 1047 Security Bill'. It has a provision to protect humanity from the dangers posed by large models of artificial intelligence.

On his social media handle X, Elon Musk said, “This is a difficult step. It may upset a lot of people. I think California SB 1047 safety bill should be passed.”

Musk further said, “For the last 20 years, I have been advocating for AI regulation, just as we regulate technologies and products that put people at risk on a wide scale.”

At the same time, a complete provision has been made in this bill to prevent the potential risks arising from AI products. An emergency button has also been provided in it, which has the ability to shut down the entire AI module.

Meanwhile, Chat GPT's Open AI has opposed the bill. In a letter to California State Senator Scott Weiner and Governor Gavin Newsom, Sam Altman said, “AI is just the beginning. California is currently emerging as a world leader. AI is also playing an important role in accelerating the state's current economic situation.”

“This bill — SB 1047 — will hinder development. Skilled engineers and entrepreneurs here will be forced to migrate,” Open AI said in its letter.

“Given those risks, we should protect America's AI edge with federal policies — rather than state ones — that can provide clarity for AI labs and developers while preserving public safety,” the AI company said.

The company further said, “Open AI also raises the issue of national security, but leaving national security aside, SB 1047 demands that AI companies test their products to ensure that no harm is caused to national security interests.”

Open AI has made it clear that if this bill passes, the company will leave California.

“This kind of lame argument was used by the tech industry when California passed a data privacy law out of fear that it would never come true,” Scott Weiner explains, “but it doesn’t hold water now.” SB 1047 is not just limited to companies headquartered in California; rather, the bill applies to anyone doing business in California.”
