Meta has signed an agreement with Sage Geosystems to purchase up to 150 megawatts of geothermal energy to power its data centers in the United States. The first phase of the project is expected to be operational in 2027, according to Reuters. And, according to Meta, it will significantly increase the use of geothermal energy in the United States.
Geothermal energy is a renewable energy that uses the heat stored in the Earth's crust, which originates from the formation and disintegration of radioactive elements in the Earth.
The new deal is part of Meta's ongoing efforts to meet the growing demand for energy that has come with the company's significant investment in energy-intensive generative artificial intelligence (genAI) technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
