Pune . Automaker Mahindra on Wednesday unveiled a new manufacturing and battery assembly facility at its Chakan plant, a fully integrated ecosystem designed for the production of electric SUVs.
To boost EV manufacturing, Mahindra has allocated Rs 4,500 crore out of the total Rs 16,000 crore planned in the F22F27 investment cycle – including powertrain development, software and tech for the two product top hats and manufacturing capacity.
The company said that the new EV manufacturing hub is a fully integrated, highly automated manufacturing ecosystem equipped with more than 1,000 robots and multiple auto transfer systems.
The EV facility also aims to have a 25 percent gender diversity ratio, strengthening the plant's inclusive and futureready work culture.
“Driven by this foundation, Mahindra is now ready to roll out the nextgeneration electric Origin SUV,” the automaker said in a statement.
The facility has over 500 robots and fully automated transfer systems installed in the body shop, which are monitored through an Internet of Things based ‘nerve centre’ to provide realtime process insights and endtoend traceability.
The facility is located at the company's 2.83 km Chakan Manufacturing Hub, one of India's largest greenfield projects. It is a waterpositive facility and is 100 percent dependent on renewable energy.
According to company chairman Anand Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra is the 11th most valuable automobile manufacturer in the world, surpassing many competitors and erstwhile technology peers.
On the EV business, he said it requires courage for a traditional SUV company to bet big on the future of electric vehicles in an uncertain world and a commitment to innovation to incorporate cutting edge technology, design and performance in such vehicles. Deep commitment is required. I hope this will be great for the future of every company in the group.
