Chennai: American automaker Ford Motor is making a comeback in India. The company will restart its manufacturing plant in Chennai to boost exports and will also recruit 2,500-3,000 additional employees. This was officially announced on Friday.
Kay Hart, president, Ford International Markets Group, said the move is aimed at “underlining our commitment to India as we seek to leverage the manufacturing expertise available in Tamil Nadu for new global markets.”
He said in a post on LinkedIn that the company has submitted a Letter of Intent “to the Government of Tamil Nadu in India, outlining the use of our Chennai plant for manufacturing for export purposes.”
The announcement comes after several rounds of meetings between top company officials and the Tamil Nadu government.
Ford Motor had shut down its operations in the year 2021 due to low sales and losses in the highly competitive domestic vehicle market.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin posted on the social media platform X and wrote that he had a very interesting discussion with the Ford Motor team.
“Explored the feasibility of reviving Ford's three-decade-old partnership with Tamil Nadu to once again manufacture in Tamil Nadu for the world,” he said.
The Chief Minister also visited the headquarters of Google, Apple and Microsoft and signed MoUs with these tech giants for investing in Tamil Nadu.
According to Hart, the decision will add to Ford's growing employee base in Chennai.
“Our global Ford Business Solutions team based there already has more than 12,000 members, and we plan to add an additional 2,500 to 3,000 members over the next few years,” Hart said.
Let us tell you that Ford's engine manufacturing team is also located in Sanand, Gujarat. After America, the company has the highest number of employees in India.
