European AI treaty adds uncertainty for CIOs, but doesn't provide many details

A treaty on the use of artificial intelligence, negotiated by representatives of 57 countries, was unveiled Thursday, but its language is so broad that it's unclear whether corporate CIOs will have to do anything differently to comply.

This mostly European initiative joins a long list of global AI compliance initiatives, adding to many new legal attempts to regulate AI in the United States. Initial signatories were Andorra, Georgia, Iceland, Norway, the Republic of Moldova, San Marino, and the United Kingdom, as well as Israel, the United States of America, and the European Union.

In its announcement, the Council of Europe stated that “there are serious risks and dangers arising from certain activities within the life cycle of artificial intelligence, such as discrimination in various contexts, gender inequality, undermining of democratic processes, undermining of human dignity or individual autonomy, or the misuse of artificial intelligence systems by some States for repressive purposes, in violation of international human rights law.”
