New Delhi: E-commerce giant Amazon on Wednesday announced the appointment of Sameer Kumar as Country Manager for India, after Manish Tiwary suddenly left the company.
According to an update released by the company today, Sameer Kumar has been working with Amazon since 1999. He will take over operational responsibilities in India from October 1.
According to the company, “Sameer Kumar, who has 25 years of experience working with Amazon, will now oversee the company's India consumer business. Manish Tiwari, current Country Manager, Amazon India, has decided to explore opportunities outside the company.”
Manish Tiwari had led Amazon's operations in India since July 2020. He resigned on August 6. The reason for Manish Tiwari's resignation is said to be that there were many differences between him and the company's senior vice president Amit Agarwal.
“Tiwari played a key role in making Amazon.in the de facto starting point for Indians to buy and sell anything online,” Amit Agarwal said in an internal email.
This new role will be an additional responsibility for Sameer Kumar, who already leads Amazon's consumer businesses in the Middle East, South Africa and Turkey.
Amit Agarwal said that India remains a key priority for Amazon. He said, “We have a strong local leadership bench and with Sameer's experiences in emerging markets, I am even more optimistic about our future plans for customers and business in India.”
Kumar, who joined Amazon in 1999, was also part of the team that planned and launched Amazon.in in 2013. With the new change, Amazon India will follow a dual leadership structure, the company said.
