After CEO Pavel Durov's arrest, Telegram says we have nothing to hide


New Delhi: Messaging platform Telegram said on Monday that CEO Pavel Durov, who has been arrested in France, has nothing to hide. It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner is responsible for the misuse of that platform.

Russianborn Durov was arrested at Le Bourget airport near Paris, France. He is accused of failing to stop criminal activities on Telegram. However, the company has said that it follows all the rules of the European Union, including the 'Digital Services Act'.

The company has said that Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has nothing to hide. He travels frequently in Europe. Telegram has more than 900 million users worldwide and it is widely used all over the world to exchange information.

The company further said, “Telegram complies with European Union rules. Its moderation is done in accordance with industry standards and we are constantly improving it.”

If Durov is convicted in court, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov lives in Dubai. He has citizenship of UAE and France. He has assets worth about $15.5 billion. Durov left Russia in 2014 due to pressure from the Russian government to ban the opposition on the Russian social media platform VK.

The Russian embassy in France has taken immediate action in this regard. Telegram offers endtoend encrypted messaging. It also allows users to create “channels” to quickly disseminate information to followers.
