7.3 crore new internet and 7.7 crore new broadband customers added in one year


New Delhi. India has registered significant growth in the telecom sector in the financial year ended March 31, 2024. The number of telephone subscribers in the country has crossed 119.9 crores while the number of broadband subscribers has increased by 9.15 percent.

The annual report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) highlights the rapid developments taking place in various services and their parameters.

This report, prepared on the basis of information provided by service providers, shows that during the financial year 20232024, the total teledensity (proportion of population having telephone facility) in the country reached 85.69 percent on 31 March 2024. It was 84.51 percent on 31 March 2023. Thus it has increased at the rate of 1.39 percent.

According to the report, during this period the total number of internet subscribers increased from 88.1 crores to 95.4 crores which shows a growth of 8.30 percent. 7.3 crore internet subscribers were added during the financial year.

Broadband services also continued to grow. The number of broadband subscribers increased from 84.6 crores a year ago to 92.4 crores as on March 31, 2024.

With this, the number of wireless data subscribers grew by 7.93 percent and increased from 84.6 crores to 91.3 crores in a year. Apart from this, the total wireless data usage increased with an annual growth of 21.69 percent from 1,60,054 PB (petabytes) during the year 202223 to 1,94,774 PB during the year 202324. One PB contains 10 lakh GB.

The total number of telephone subscribers in the country increased from 117.2 crores at the end of March 2023 to 119.9 crores at the end of March 2024, i.e. a growth of 2.30 percent in one year. The average minutes of usage (MOU) per subscriber per month in India increased from 919 during the year 202223 to 963 in 202324.

Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) of telecom companies registered an annual growth of 8.24 per cent during the financial year. It increased from Rs 2,49,908 crore in the year 202223 to Rs 2,70,504 crore in the year 202324.
