WTC Final: India on top, Sri Lanka also ahead in the race after defeating New Zealand


Dubai. Team India consolidated their hold on the top spot in the World Test Championship (WTC 2025) cycle with a massive 280run win against Bangladesh at Chepauk while Sri Lanka boosted their chances of making it to the final by beating New Zealand.

Both teams have gained crucial points, increasing the excitement in the race for the final two spots in the World Test Championship final to be held at Lord's next year.

India now tops the WTC points table with 71.67%. Ravichandran Ashwin became the Player of the Match for his allround performance. He scored a century in the first innings and took six wickets in the second innings. In this way, India bowled out Bangladesh for 234 runs and captured the match on the fourth day.

Resuming the day at 1584 and chasing a mammoth target of 515, Bangladesh's hopes rested on skipper Nazmul Hossain Shanto and allrounder Shakib Al Hasan.

However, the spin duo of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja did not allow the Bangladeshi batsmen to settle at the crease and secured crucial 12 WTC points for the team.

Bangladesh (39.29%) has slipped to sixth place due to this defeat. Ahead of them are Sri Lanka and England.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka took advantage of their win over New Zealand in Galle to jump to third place in the WTC standings. Dhananjaya de Silva's side are now in a strong position to challenge the top teams for a place in the final.

Sri Lanka's 63run win over the Blackcaps came after a thrilling fiveday match, with Prabhat Jayasuriya emerging as the hero for the team. He took a total of 9 wickets and won the Player of the Match award.

Sri Lanka's win has made them a strong contender to make it to the WTC final. They will now need big wins against South Africa and then Australia to secure their place in the final.
