With the excellent bowling of acting captain Jasprit Bumrah (5 wickets for 30 runs) and brilliant halfcenturies from Yashasvi Jaiswal (90 not out) and KL Rahul (62 not out), India scored 172 runs in its second innings without losing any wicket and won the first Test against Australia. On Saturday, on the second day, took a total lead of 218 runs.
India had taken a lead of 46 runs in the first innings. After bowling out Australia for 104 in the morning, the Indian openers displayed solid batting and kept the Australian bowlers away from taking wickets. Jaiswal has hit 7 fours and 2 sixes in 90 runs on 193 balls, while Rahul has hit 4 fours in 62 runs on 153 balls. Both the batsmen batted with great caution and scored runs at a run rate of 3.01.
Both have made an unbeaten partnership of 172 runs in 57 overs. In the first innings, Jaiswal was out after scoring zero and Rahul after scoring 26 runs. But in the second innings he set an example of courage and passion. India dominated and consolidated its position in the last session of the day yesterday and all three sessions on the second day. India will now aim to further strengthen its lead on the third day.
Earlier, Australia started yesterday's game ahead by 67 runs for seven wickets. Australia lost two wickets early and their score became 79 runs for nine wickets. Bumrah got Alex Carey caught by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Carey scored 21 runs. This was Bumrah's fifth wicket. He took four wickets yesterday. Bumrah took 5 wickets in an innings for the 11th time in his Test career.
Harshit Rana took Australia's ninth wicket by getting Nathan Lyon caught by KL Rahul in the slips. But after this, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood made a partnership of 25 runs for the last wicket and took the host team beyond 100. Rana trapped Australia's innings at 104 runs by getting Starc caught by Pant. Starc scored a useful 26 runs in 112 balls, which was the highest score for his team. Hazlewood remained unbeaten on seven runs.
For India, Bumrah took five wickets for 30 runs in 18 overs, while Mohammad Siraj took two wickets for 20 runs and Rana took three wickets for 48 runs.
