New Delhi. The Proteas are still looking for their first ICC tournament win after losing to Australia by 19 runs in the final of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023. However, captain Laura Wolvaardt is hopeful that her team will lift the trophy this time.
“Reaching our first World Cup final in 2023 was a big historic moment for us. It was a big moment for the team to 'break barriers and push boundaries'. Before that (2023 T20 World Cup) we had made it to the semifinals on several occasions, so it is very important for us to take a step forward as a group,” Wolvaardt was quoted as saying on the ICC website.
“Now we would like to go one step further and lift the trophy but anything can happen in a T20 final because to get there you have to play the entire competition and perform well.”
South Africa managed to reach the final after suffering two big defeats against Sri Lanka and Australia in the group stage of the 2023 edition.
Wolvardt believes that this time too the team has the potential to perform strongly in the mega event as the team combination is strong.
With the tournament being shifted to Sharjah and Dubai in the UAE from Bangladesh, the captain believes it will add more excitement to the matches as no team will have the home advantage anymore.
He said, “I am very excited about the T20 World Cup to be held in Dubai and Sharjah. I think the best thing is that it is a similar venue for all the teams. Most of the teams will go there with similar experience in the conditions, because they have not played much there before, so it is quite exciting.''
“It will be very interesting to see which team adapts best to the circumstances.”
