The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to do away with daily allowances for players reporting for national camps. The decision not to give any kind of daily allowance to the players has left many disappointed and upset. “The players are not given daily allowances as the board is now providing them with accommodation and three full meals during the day,” a PCB official said. But the players, who are attending the training camp in Multan for the home series against the South African women’s team, feel the decision was not fair as they had gathered from different parts of the country.
The South African team has already arrived in Multan and is gearing up for the white-ball series starting on September 17, seen as a warm-up for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates next month.
Interestingly, Pakistani men's team players are offered the option of getting two square meals a day, accommodation and a daily allowance.
A source familiar with the situation said that until recently the board had been providing per diem to the players.
The decision to change the policy comes at a time when the board is spending millions on several other projects, including Rs 5 crore in monthly salaries for five team coaches in the ongoing Champions Cup in Faisalabad.
The board is also spending around 12.8 billion on refurbishing three Test venues in the country ahead of the Champions Trophy early next year.
“No one knows what difference a few hundred thousand rupees will make to the board, but it has the potential to create discontent in women's cricket,” said a former Pakistan player.
The board official said that when the players participate in the series they will be given daily allowances.
The players are also still waiting for the board of directors to announce their central contracts for the fiscal year that has already been delayed by more than a month.
Last year, the board awarded central contracts to 19 players.
