New Delhi . Odisha Warriors captain Neha is all set to embark on a historic journey by leading her team in the firstever Women's Hockey India League (HIL) 202425. Having recently led the Indian team to victory in the Asian Champions Trophy, Neha now steps into the captaincy role with new energy and focus for this historic event for Indian hockey.
Reflecting on the significance of the inaugural Women's HIL, Neha underlined its importance for the next generation of players. “We've been waiting for a platform like this for years, and now that it's finally here, it feels surreal,” he said. This is a great opportunity for young girls to showcase their talent on the national stage. This league will also motivate those who could not make it this season and aim for the next edition. I am confident that HIL will help in bringing out new talent for the Indian team.”
Neha, who has been appointed captain of Odisha Warriors, is eager to take up the new responsibility. “This is my first major tournament as captain, and despite the feeling of pressure, I am excited for the challenge. I have been a part of the Indian setup for some time now, so I know how to move when needed. I have always taken up leadership roles, be it guiding my teammates or taking important decisions on the field. Our team is full of experienced and talented players, so I won't need to tell them much. “My goal is to lead by example and bring out the best in my team.”
Despite recent personal achievements including her marriage, Neha remains focused on balancing her professional and personal commitments. “Managing both aspects of my life is something I have been doing for years. My marriage has not changed my approach towards sports. My husband is incredibly supportive and understands how much hockey means to me. So, my only focus right now is on HIL, and I am ready to give my all.”
In the HIL auction, Neha was bought for Rs 10 lakh, which is a testament to her valuable contribution to the game. Although they haven't decided how to use the money, they hope to contribute to the development of young athletes. “I want to give back in some way, maybe by helping girls in hockey academies who need financial assistance,” she said.
After her win at the Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir, Bihar, Neha is bringing the same confidence and determination to HIL. “Playing in front of the home crowd is always special. The energy and support of the fans played a big role in our success in Rajgir, and I expect a similar atmosphere in HIL as well. As a central midfielder, my aim is to support both attack and defence, and help my team in every aspect.”
As Women's HIL prepares to revolutionize Indian women's hockey, Neha gave words of encouragement to the aspiring young players. “My advice to young players is to take advantage of this opportunity and express themselves on the field. We've waited a long time for a league like this, and it's finally here. Use this platform to work hard. Do this to improve your skills and shine in the early stages of your career.”
