India aims to make it to the World Championship in an important match against Japan.

New Delhi. The Indian women's handball team is set for a highstakes clash against former champions Japan at the Asian Women's Handball Championship 2024 on Friday, which stands on the threshold of history.

After an impressive win over Hong Kong and a narrow twopoint loss to giants Iran, India's spirited performance has taken them to a milestone: a win could seal not only a place in the semifinals, but also a place in Germany and the Netherlands in 2025. This could also be their first qualification for the upcoming IHF World Women's Handball Championship.

Presented by the World Handball League (WHL) and organized by the Asian Handball Federation, India is hosting the tournament for the first time at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi from December 3 to 10.

As per the points table, Team India currently has 2 points and their goal difference is +1, which places them at the second position in their group, just behind Japan. They have the same number of points as Iran, who also have 2 points, but are behind India due to a goal difference of -18. India will face Japan while Iran, semifinalists in the last two editions, will face Hong Kong on Friday. If India matches or surpasses Iran's result while maintaining a better goal difference, they will move on and create history.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan will face Singapore, who are yet to register a single win. Currently, South Korea top the group with four points, followed by China and Kazakhstan, both of whom have secured two points from two matches in their group.

Doordarshan is the broadcast partner of the 20th Asian Women's Handball Championship; The DD telecast will include highlights aired on prime time and live coverage of the final days. Meanwhile, the matches will be live streamed on Sportscast India's YouTube channel.
