Everyone's eyes are on the Chennai Test, what is the difference between black and red soil pitches?

New Delhi. Team India is continuously sweating it out in the training camp to prepare for the Test series against Bangladesh starting on 19th September. The spectators are excited about the first Test match to be played at Chennai's Chepauk Stadium. Meanwhile, many questions are being raised about the pitch, which has increased the problems of the teams regarding the combination of the bowling line-up.

According to the pictures and information that have come out so far, the first test match between India and Bangladesh to be held in Chennai will be played on a red soil pitch. The bounce on such a pitch remains the same and initially fast bowlers may get help. However, gradually the nature of the pitch also becomes favorable for spin.

In cricket, pitches are mostly prepared from red and black soil, but what is the difference between these two? The pitch plays a special role in the result of any match. Let us know in detail what role the soil of the pitch plays in this.

The effect of the pitch on batsmen and bowlers is largely determined by its composition. Generally, the pitch is made of a mixture of clay, slit and sand. These can be adjusted by the pitch curator depending on the requirements and format of the match.

The red soil pitch absorbs less water than other pitches and hence starts drying up quickly. This is the reason why big cracks appear in the pitch after three to four sessions of the match. On this pitch, fast bowlers get a lot of bounce in the beginning of the match. Due to the uniform bounce, batsmen also find it easy to play after getting set. But as the soil starts cracking, the spin bowlers get the upper hand and the game can become challenging for the batsmen.

However, the black soil pitch which has a high clay content absorbs water better. Due to which the pitch can remain without cracks for a longer time. However, this creates uneven bounce and batsmen have to take time to settle down. Especially when such pitches break, batsmen face a lot of problems.

While preparing the black soil pitch, more amount of clay is used. This pitch absorbs more water as compared to red soil. Due to which there are less cracks in the pitch and spin bowlers get good grip. Such pitches are favorable for spin bowling and can present the challenge of spin bowling to the batsmen.
