Turin. Alexander Zverev began his quest for a third ATP Finals trophy with an impressive win. Second seed Zverev opened his account in the season final by defeating Andrey Rublev 64, 64.
Alexander Zverev, who won the title in 2018 and 2021, fended off Rublev's fast start and secured his tourleading 67th win of 2024 in just 72 minutes.
After getting the better of 73 in the ATP headtohead series, the German will look to continue his hattrick run against Casper Ruud, who had earlier defeated third seed Carlos Alcaraz in the John Newcombe Group.
ATP quoted Zverev as saying, “I thought it was a very solid match from my side. Against anyone here, you have to play your best to get a chance. I did that, I thought I took my chances.” Used it very well and I am definitely happy with this win.”
According to ATP Stats, Rublev performed brilliantly, winning the first 13 points on his serve. However, a slip in the seventh game allowed Zverev to earn his first break of the match.
The German player, known for his patience, waited for the right opportunity in the second set and broke in the ninth game to maintain his strong record (61) in roundrobin matches at the event.
Zverev became the first player to defeat Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at the Nitto ATP Finals in 2019. The 2024 edition is the first time since 2001 that the 'Big Three' are not competing in the season finals.
