TRAI has given extension to implement the new traceability rules, giving huge relief to crores of mobile users of the country. The telecom regulator has decided to give one month extension to entities and telecom operators for this. However, the telecom regulator has also set a condition for this. The rule of message traceability was to be implemented from November 1, after which users could face problem in getting OTP i.e. one time password on mobile. However, at present users will not face any problem in getting OTP.
Got extension of 1 month
The telecom regulator has given an ultimatum to implement the message traceability rule from December 1, 2024. TRAI and the Department of Telecommunications are serious about fake calls and messages. To deal with this, the government has implemented a new rule from October 1, 2024, in which users without whitelisted messages and calls will not be received. Additionally, messages with unwhitelisted URLs will also be blocked at the network level.
TRAI has said in its guidelines that on August 13, 2024, instructions have been issued to bring strict regulation regarding promotional voice calls. It has been said that strict action will be taken against violation of rules, which includes blacklisting of telecom resources and blocking of numbers. Following TRAI's directive, till now more than 800 entities or individuals have been blacklisted for violation of rules and more than 18 lakh mobile numbers have been blocked.
The telecom regulator had also issued instructions on August 20, 2024 regarding whitelisting APK, URL and OTT links. The rules related to this have been implemented from October 1, 2024. Also, from October 1, telemarketing calls coming from the number 140 have been migrated to the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) based blockchain platform.

The guidelines related to message traceability were to be implemented from November 1, 2024, for which TRAI has given an extension of one month i.e. 30 days. Now this rule will be implemented from December 1, 2024. On the request of telecom companies and industry body COAI, the telecom regulator has decided to give this extension, so that users do not face any problem in getting OTP. Instructions related to this were issued on 28 August 2024. After giving an extension of 30 days, TRAI has also placed a condition that after November 30, 2024, telecom operators should issue daily warnings to the entities to complete the compliance of message traceability.
