In Episode 128 of This Week in Space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik discuss what's happening with Boeing's CST-100 Starliner spacecraft.
Starliner is back, and by all indications, it could have returned with its crew if it had been needed. However, with Agency’s “safety first” approach prevailing, the spacecraft landed uncrewed on Sept. 6, three months after docking with the International Space Station. Now, work begins to try to resolve the issues — largely software changes, dealing with faulty thrusters and helium leaks — so that Starliner Crew 1 can fly next year.
But how did we get here? What is Agency's take on the latest Starliner mission? And, perhaps most of all, how will Boeing approach the program going forward? We'll bring you the latest and greatest, and fear not, we've got Tariq here to keep us fair.

Tariq Malik, Space.com’s editorial vision officer, has been Space.com’s editor-in-chief since 2019 and has covered space news and science for 18 years. He joined the Space.com team in 2001, first as an intern and soon after as a full-time spaceflight reporter, covering human spaceflight, exploration, astronomy, and the night sky. He became Space.com’s managing editor in 2009. As on-air talent, he has anchored space stories on CNN, Fox News, NPR, and elsewhere.
Tariq is a Boy Scout (yes, he earned the Space Exploration merit badge), a Space Camp veteran (4 times as a kid, once as an adult), and has made the most spectacular “vomit comet” ride while reporting on fires in zero gravity. Prior to joining Space.com, he worked as a staff reporter for The Los Angeles Times, where he covered city and education-related beats. He holds journalism degrees from the University of Southern California and New York University.
