PMO has issued a new order for SIM card sellers. A new instruction has been issued by the PMO to DoT, in which it has been asked to stop the sale of SIM cards without Aadhar card biometric verification. Aadhaar based biometric verification has been made mandatory for all new connections. This order of the government has been issued due to criminals purchasing new mobile connections through fake documents and then committing fraud through them.
new rule of sim card
According to SIM card rules, any government ID other than Aadhar card can be used to get a new mobile connection, which includes Voter ID, Passport etc. This order issued by the Prime Minister's Office has been issued to make the rules for selling SIM cards more strict. According to the ET report, SIM card retailers will not be able to sell SIM cards without biometric verification.
This instruction by the PMO has come after the recently held review meeting of the telecom sector. DoT is working with law enforcement agencies (LEAs) to identify and punish criminals by leveraging AI based tools. The Department of Telecommunications has been told that no SIM card will be issued without Aadhaar based biometric verification. By doing this the mobile phone will not be used for fraud.
In a recent meeting regarding cyber crime, it was revealed that the same device has been used for multiple SIM cards in violation of the rules of the telecom sector. These SIM cards have been used for financial fraud. In its instructions issued to the Department of Telecommunications, the PMO has asked it to identify any SIM card sellers who issue SIM cards using fake documents.
