DoT has ordered telecom companies Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vodafone Idea to roll out CNAP service soon. Telecom companies have been testing the Caller ID Name Presentation or CNAP feature since last year. After the introduction of this feature, every caller coming to the phone can be easily identified. The Department of Telecommunications has asked telecom companies to implement this soon to get rid of fake calls coming on people's numbers.
roll out soon
According to ET Telecom report, in a meeting held with telecom operators last week, the Department of Telecommunications said that this technology is being trialled. This technology will work for smartphone users. 2G feature phone users will not get the benefit of this feature. After the implementation of CNAP, the name of the caller will be visible in the incoming calls on the mobile user's phone. In this, the same name of the caller will be visible, in whose name the SIM card has been issued. In such a situation, scammers will not be able to make fake calls to the users.
PMO order
Recently, PMO i.e. Prime Minister's Office has also directed the Department of Telecommunications, keeping in mind the interests of mobile users across the country, that new SIM cards should not be sold without Aadhaar biometric verification. By doing this, SIM cards cannot be issued through fake documents and frauds happening to people can be curbed.
What is CNAP?
CNAP is a supplementary service that displays the caller's name on the phone screen. Currently, third party apps such as Truecaller and Bharat Caller ID & Anti Spam also provide Calling Party Name Identification (CPNI) feature. This service of third party apps is based on crowd sourced data, which is not reliable. TRAI has based the recommendations made by CNAP last year on the basis of the name recorded in the user's KYC document, so that the true caller can be identified. This feature will display the caller name based on the KYC registration data given by the user while purchasing the SIM card. In this way the user will see the name of the caller in the phone display.
