Google once again 'messed with' the European Union, refused to accept the new policy – Top News Bulletin

Google has once again messed with the European Union. The American tech company told the EU that it will not follow their new disinformation code of practice policy. According to the report of Axios, Google told the European Union that it will not use it to influence the ranking and removal of content under the rule of fact checking in its search results and YouTube videos. Google has said this by writing a letter to the Deputy Director General of the Content and Technology Division of the European Union.

According to the report, Google's Global Affairs President Kent Walker said in his letter that under the European Union's new Disinformation Code of Practice, fact checking for Google services will not be accurate and effective. In his letter, Walker said that Google is not committed to this.

What is the new policy of EU?

The European Union's new Disinformation Code of Practice was first introduced in 2018, which was later updated in 2022. The policy outlined voluntary commitments for tech companies to deal with rumors. In the code of conduct proposed by the European Union, all platforms including Google were asked to show fact check in search results and YouTube video results. Also, called for factor checking to be included in their ranking algorithms.

What is Google's argument?

Google is continuously keeping fact checking out of its content moderation strategy. In his letter, Walker said that the extent to which fact checking is affected under the company's current policy can be seen in the recent global elections. Google has not committed to doing fact checking under the new code of the European Union. The company is already doing fact checking due to the new Digital Services Act (DSA) brought by the European Union.

The tech company is also preparing to upgrade its existing content moderation in addition to refusing to comply with the European Union's fact-checking codes. For this, AI transparency tools will be used in YouTube so that results with better context can be found in the search results of video content.
