There may be a delay in starting Elon Musk's satellite internet service Starlink and Amazon Web's satellite service in India. The Department of Telecommunications has placed a big demand before these two companies. Recently, the government had sought suggestions from stakeholders regarding spectrum allocation, price etc. for satellite internet service. The government is soon going to start the process of spectrum allocation to service providers.
DoT placed this demand
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked to quickly complete the security related compliance regarding Elon Musk's Starlink and Amazon's satellite service. The Department of Telecommunications has approved Airtel's Eutelsat Oneweb and Jio's SES satellite internet service. DoT has asked both these companies to submit documents related to the necessary security parameters to take the application process forward.
According to the ET report, both these companies have not yet submitted information related to security compliance. A letter has been written to these two companies by the Department of Telecommunications. An official associated with this matter says that after waiting for a few days, a reminder will be sent by the government. Only if these companies accept all the security related conditions, their applications will be processed further.
Document sharing instructions
The officer says that there are many areas in the country which are very sensitive from security point of view. In such a situation, satellite companies will have to share documents related to data, coverage area etc. with the government. Only after this the government will offer these companies to start services in India. Elon Musk has applied for a Global Mobile Personal Communications Satellite Service (GMPCS) license in October 2022. Whereas, Amazon has submitted the application last year.
Telecom regulator (TRAI) is currently taking feedback from other stakeholders regarding the pricing and other conditions of spectrum of satellite internet service. In India, Airtel, Jio and Vodafone-Idea will provide terrestrial field mobile service as well as satellite service. At the same time, Amazon and Starlink are also going to be their main competitors in satellite service.
