Apple has suffered another major blow. The European Union Commission has directed to bring another product of the company under the purview of regulation. The European Commission has asked Apple to keep the operating system used in the iPad within the purview of the Digital Marketing Act (DMA). The European Commission has given gatekeeper status to operating systems used in mobile devices.
Strict instructions to Apple
While sharing this information through its official X handle, the European Commission has said that Apple will have to design its iPadOS in accordance with the terms of the Digital Markets Act. In its post, the European Commission has given instructions saying that like other brands, Apple should also give users the freedom to choose their favorite web browser on their devices. Also, users should be provided with an alternative app store like the Apple App Store. Additionally, all accessory devices must have permission to access iPadOS features.
The European Commission has listed Apple iPadOS as its core platform service in April 2024. The Commission has given the status of gatekeeper to these core services. Following this directive from the European Commission, Apple will need to make changes in its iPadOS. This will also affect Apple's revenue. However, Google gives users the freedom to choose the default web browser in its Android operating system.
Apple submitted report
Apple has published its compliance report following this directive of the European Union, in which it has shared the details of making iPadOS compliant with the Digital Marketing Act. However, the anti-trust regulator is yet to examine the compliance report published by Apple, after which it will be clear whether the company has violated any rules or not. The European Union has given information about Apple publishing the compliance report in the thread of its post.
Earlier, under pressure from the European Union Commission, Apple had started providing USB Type C charging feature in all its mobile devices. The company launched the iPhone 15 series with USB Type C port last year in 2023. The European Union is a bigger market for Apple after America. In such a situation, following the instructions of the European Commission, Apple can make major changes in its iPadOS.
