Taking major action against cyber crime, the government has closed 80 lakh SIM cards. According to the Department of Telecommunications, the discontinued SIM cards were issued on the basis of fake documents. The government has blocked these fake SIM cards using AI tools. Apart from this, 6.78 lakh mobile numbers involved in cyber crime have also been closed.
78.33 lakh mobile numbers switched off
Telecom regulator and Department of Telecommunications have once again taken major action against the increasing cyber crime. According to the report, the government has blocked 78.33 lakh mobile numbers. These mobile numbers were issued to people on the basis of fake documents. With the help of new AI tools implemented by the Department of Telecommunications, these fake numbers were identified and action was taken against them. Not only this, the government has also blocked 6.78 lakh mobile numbers involved in cyber crime.
The Department of Telecommunications has given this information through its official X handle. Meanwhile, while speaking at an event, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the Department of Telecommunications in collaboration with the Home Ministry has issued cyber crime helpline number 1930. On the basis of complaint made on this number, the government has saved Rs 3.5 thousand crore from 10 lakh people.
TRAI's new policy
TRAI has announced the implementation of new rules to prevent cybercrime in August. The telecom regulator issued new guidelines to telecom operators to curb fake calls and messages, which was implemented from October 1, 2024. Apart from this, the rule of message traceability has also come into effect from December 11, 2024. In this way users will get relief from fake telemarketing calls and messages. Such calls and messages will be blocked at the network level itself.
Also, message traceability rule has been implemented to track fake messages, in which telecom operators will be able to easily track the chain of any message from its originating number. Recently, the government has also blocked many international WhatsApp numbers, which were being used for financial fraud and digital arrest.
