New Delhi: DY Chandrachud retired from the post of Chief Justice of the country on Sunday. Justice Sanjeev Khanna has replaced him. Justice Sanjeev Khanna has today taken oath as the 51st Chief Justice of the country. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
What work can DY Chandrachud not do after retirement?
Due to Article 124(7) of the Constitution, DY Chandrachud cannot practice law anywhere in the country. That is, after retirement from the Supreme Court, the profession of advocacy cannot be adopted by the CJI or the judges. Although he can play other roles.
Legal experts say that such a provision has been made so that the sanctity and impartiality of the judiciary is maintained. There is no possibility of bias due to this. In fact, one thing that comes out of this is that if the former CJI of the country takes up advocacy, then the dignity of his previous post will be weakened.
What can one do after retirement?
- Can enter public service.
- Can become governor or member of government committees.
- Can become a mediator in disputes.
- Can become a member of the Arbitration Council of India.
- Can become heads of commissions and tribunals like National Human Rights Commission.
