Indian Army had started Operation Pawan on this day in the year 1987. This is considered to be the most difficult operation in the history of the Indian Army. According to an estimate, 1200 Indian soldiers were killed and more than 3000 soldiers were injured. Rajiv Gandhi was also assassinated due to this operation. Although the Indian government was forced to do this, as this operation progressed, it was said that it would have been better if this operation had not been started at all. Let us know what happened that made this operation seen as a wrong decision.
The Tamil population in Sri Lanka was a minority, while the Sinhalese population was the majority. In such a situation, the Sri Lankan government was accused of discriminating against the Tamil population. Tamil people complained about this, but the government did not pay any attention to it. Troubled by this, Sri Lankan Tamils started demanding a separate country. When the Sri Lankan government tried to suppress it with military force, the rebellion became violent. In such a situation, Tamil refugees started coming and settling in Tamil Nadu, India.
Indian government's compulsion
Troubled by the increasing number of Sri Lankan refugees, the Indian government entered into an agreement with Sri Lanka. Under this agreement, the Indian Army had to end the rebellion by concluding a peace agreement in Sri Lanka. Most Tamil organizations agreed to the peace agreement. However, the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) betrayed and began a guerrilla war. In such a situation, the Indian Army and LTTE fighters came face to face. To end this fighting, Operation Pawan was started. In about two weeks the Indian Army liberated Jaffna and other major cities. However, even after this many operations continued.
Why did you regret it?
When the Indian government decided to send its army to Sri Lanka, it had no idea of the circumstances. LTTE is the only terrorist organization in the world, which at one time had its own army, air force and navy. In such a situation, the Indian Army suffered huge losses here. It is believed that 1200 Indian soldiers were martyred in this operation. At the same time, 3000 soldiers were injured. India eventually liberated Jaffna and other cities from LTTE occupation and virtually destroyed the organization in Sri Lanka, but the Indian Army also suffered significant losses.
