Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 The JPC meeting of Parliament is continuing. In the meeting held on Monday, several state Waqf boards including Punjab Waqf Board, Haryana Waqf Board and Uttarakhand Waqf Board gave their views and suggestions in the JPC meeting. A unique idea has been shared by Uttarakhand Waqf Board in this meeting. Uttarakhand Waqf Board has suggested that the Waqf Board land should be given to the families of soldiers.
What is the suggestion?
Uttarakhand Waqf Board said that when a soldier fights for the country, he does not fight as a Hindu, Muslim or any other religion, but as a patriot. Keeping this sentiment in mind the Board suggested a legal provision to allocate certain benefits from Waqf properties to soldiers or their families. The board suggested that except the Dargah, Mosque and graveyard, the other land given on lease by the Waqf Board should be given to the families of the soldiers.
Demand for provision of CBI investigation
The proposal of Uttarakhand Waqf Board was also opposed by many MPs from opposition parties. However, the Uttarakhand Waqf Board said that instead of drawing parallels with other religions, they can start a new standard. Uttarakhand Waqf Board supported the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 and said that in respect of disputed properties, the JPC should include provisions for thorough inspection and, where necessary, CBI investigation.
Debate between BJP and opposition MPs
Earlier on Monday itself, there was a debate between BJP and opposition MPs regarding calling Delhi Waqf Board before the committee. According to ANI sources, opposition MPs have alleged that MCD Commissioner and Delhi Waqf Board Administrator, Ashwini Kumar, allegedly made substantial changes in the original report of the Waqf Board without the CM's approval.
