Koppal (Karnataka): A court in Koppal district has convicted 101 people and sentenced them to life imprisonment for setting fire to a Dalit community settlement. The accused were recently convicted and sentenced by the court on Thursday. This is the first case in the history of the state when such a large number of accused have been sentenced to life imprisonment in an atrocity case.
Family members of all the accused gathered at the Koppal court complex and had tears in their eyes as the police took them to jail. The accused will be taken to Koppal district jail and later shifted to Ballari jail.
Know what was the whole matter
This case related to caste-based violence took place on August 28, 2014 in Markumbi village of Gangavati taluka. The accused had set fire to the houses of people of Dalit community. The clash started over Dalits being refused entry into barber shops and dhabas. Angered by the activism of some Dalit youth who raised questions on untouchability in the village, the accused entered the Dalit colony and set fire to their huts. The accused also destroyed houses and attacked Dalits.
16 accused died during hearing
The incident led to widespread protests in many parts of the state. According to the prosecution, 117 people were accused in the case, out of which 16 died during the trial. (with language inputs)
