A shocking report has come out regarding the scorching heat, heavy rains and landslides in the country. According to the report, more than 3,200 people lost their lives due to several incidents of extreme heat and heavy rain in the first nine months of 2024. 2. More than 3 lakh houses were destroyed. This shocking report is from Delhi-based think tank Center for Science and Environment (CSE).
The weather remained worst for 255 days.
India has faced worst weather events in the first nine months of the year 2024 i.e. 255 days out of 274 days. The report said the extreme heat, heavy rains and incidents of landslides have killed 3,238 people. The bad weather has affected 3.2 million hectares (MHA) of crops. Heavy rains destroyed 2,35,862 houses and buildings and killed 9,457 livestock.
Last year about 3000 people were killed
In comparison, in the first nine months of 2023, 235 out of 273 days of bad weather were recorded. 2,923 deaths were recorded in this. 1. 84 million hectares of crops were affected. A year ago i.e. in the year 2023, 80,293 houses were damaged. 92,519 animals were killed.
Worst weather in Madhya Pradesh
Analysts presenting the report said that Madhya Pradesh experienced 176 days of extremely bad weather in 9 months of the year 2024, which is the highest in the country. Kerala recorded the highest number of deaths at 550 due to bad weather. After this, 353 people lost their lives in Madhya Pradesh and 256 in Assam.

Bad weather made many records
Many climate change records were also established in the year 2024. January was India's ninth driest month since 1901. In February, the country recorded its second highest minimum temperature in 123 years. May recorded the fourth highest average temperature on record. July, August and September all recorded their highest minimum temperatures since 1901.
Extreme heat only in the months of March and April
January was the second driest month in the north-western part of the country. The region recorded the second highest minimum temperature in July. The southern peninsula experienced the warmest February on record. This was followed by exceptionally hot and heat wave-like conditions in March and April. At the same time, there was 36.5 percent more rainfall in the month of July. The second highest minimum temperature was recorded in August.
1376 people lost their lives due to flood
CSE Director General Sunita Narayan said the record-breaking figures reflect the impact of climate change. Where earlier the events used to happen once in every century. They are now happening every five years or less. According to the report, 1,376 people died due to floods, while 1,021 people lost their lives due to lightning and storm. The heatwave killed 210 people.
