When there is excessive phlegm formation in the body, is it better to spit it out or swallow it internally?

When excessive phlegm is formed in the body, what is the right way to expel it – this question is related to health and it is very important to take the right decision. Phlegm is a natural product of our respiratory system, which helps capture bacteria, viruses, dust, or other harmful particles and expel them from the body.

The main purpose of Kapha is to keep the body clean and safe. It is usually more beneficial to spit it out, but it is also not harmful to swallow it, especially when the situation calls for it. Hygiene and personal health should be a priority.

Spitting phlegm:
When the phlegm is thick and you feel like spitting it out easily, spitting is a better option. Phlegm may contain bacteria, viruses, and other impurities, and expelling it helps keep the respiratory tract clean. Spit it out in a place where hygiene is maintained, such as into a tissue or cough disposal dustbin.

Swallowing phlegm:
If you are in a situation where spitting is not possible, swallowing phlegm does not cause any serious problems. When swallowed, phlegm passes into the digestive tract, where stomach acids neutralize it. However, repeated swallowing may cause a burning sensation in the throat or heaviness in the stomach.

Which option is better?
If you are in a place where spitting phlegm is appropriate from a health and social point of view, it is better to do it outside. It immediately removes bacteria and viruses from the respiratory system. If spitting is not an option, swallowing phlegm is not a big problem as the digestive system takes care of it.

What to do for this?
Drink plenty of lukewarm water during the day. Take steam, so that the phlegm becomes thin and can come out easily. Consume ginger, honey, and basil, which help in expelling phlegm. Avoid spicy and oily food in your diet, as it can increase phlegm. If phlegm persists for a long time, consult a doctor.
