New Delhi. Hyperuricemia i.e. high levels of uric acid cause many diseases in the body. When the amount of uric acid in our body increases, it causes joint pain, difficulty in walking, and difficulty in getting up and sitting. It affects our joints the most.
The problem worsens with age. This is directly related to increased protein intake. Uric acid increases due to high intake of protein and purines (molecules made of carbon and nitrogen found in DNA and RNA).
To control uric acid, it is important to pay special attention to diet. Some foods, especially pulses, kidney beans, chickpeas, etc. can increase the level of uric acid in our body, so they should be consumed wisely.
To know what people suffering from uric acid should eat and what they should not eat to prevent the increase of uric acid, we spoke to Dr. Amit Kumar, Director of Shatayu Ayurveda and Panchkarma Center in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh.
According to Dr. Amit Kumar, “With increasing age, our kidneys are not able to digest protein completely, due to which the kidney does not function properly. When the kidney does not do its work properly, its direct effect is visible in many parts of the body. One of the major reasons for this is the increase in uric acid. However, it is not necessary that only older people have to face this problem. Sometimes even very young people have increased uric acid. They have to deal with problems like joint pain, tendon pain. This problem is often seen in people who drink too much alcohol.”
The next question is what to do? How to avoid it? Dr. Amit says that to prevent the increase of uric acid, it is most important to stop drinking alcohol or consume it as little as possible. Also, the consumption of high protein foods like tur, chana dal, rajma, chickpeas and paneer, tofu should be stopped completely. All these foods are rich in protein. Eating these can increase the uric acid level.
So what should we do to control everything? Doctor sahab advises that we should drink enough water to control uric acid. We should exercise regularly and take a healthy diet to control uric acid level.
Yes one more thing, if there is pain in the joints then eat fruits and vegetables in large quantity because it reduces the amount of protein and purine in the body and due to this uric acid automatically comes under control.
Be it the northern part of India or the southern part, one thing that is a must in the diet is dal. Generally, it is cooked daily in every household. But patients suffering from high uric acid are prohibited from consuming any dal. Still, if you feel like it, you can consume moong and urad dal in appropriate quantity.
