New Delhi, . A major research conducted in Sweden has revealed that drinking sweet beverages can significantly increase the risk of serious cardiovascular diseases like stroke, heart attack and atrial fibrillation.
Research has shown that consuming too much sugar can increase the risk of stroke or aneurysm. However, on the contrary, consuming sugar in limited quantities can be safe.
The research, published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, states that consumption of sweetened beverages is more harmful to your health than any other type of sugar.
“Sweetened beverages that contain liquid sugar generally provide less satiety than other sweeteners,” said Suzanne Janzi, a doctoral candidate at Lund University.
Janzi said it doesn't make people feel full, making them more likely to overdose.
Furthermore, unlike beverages that are often enjoyed at social occasions or special occasions, sugary beverages can be consumed regularly.
To understand how sugar intake affects heart disease risk, the team combined data from two major researches with a sample of 69,705 participants.
The research evaluated the association between sweetened beverages such as honey, pastries or carbonated beverages and seven cardiovascular diseases. The two are responsible for different types of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, aortic aneurysm, atrial fibrillation and aortic stenosis.
During this research that lasted for 10 years, heart disease was detected in 25,739 participants.
Research suggests that high sugar intake in general increases the risk of ischemic stroke and abdominal aortic aneurysm. It also increased the risk of heart failure in participants with normal BMI.
Notably, the researchers found that the greatest risk of negative health outcomes began at low intakes, suggesting that extremely low sugar intake may not be necessary or beneficial for heart health.
However, Janji said that this study is observational and causeeffect relationship cannot be established from it.
