Sitting for too long is dangerous for the heart, American study increases tension


New Delhi . Nowadays, the habit of sitting for long periods of time has become a serious health problem. According to a new study, one in four people in America sits for more than 8 hours every day. A study recently published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and presented at the 2024 Scientific Session of the American Heart Association revealed that if you sit, lie down or rest for more than 10.6 hours every day, it May increase the risk of heart failure and death from heart disease. In this study, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Cambridge analyzed data from 89,530 participants from the UK Biobank. The daily activities of the people involved in the study were tracked, after which it was known for how long the people were in sitting, lying or resting position. Additionally, it also tracked how many people engaged in high physical activity. The study also showed that a maximum of 150 minutes of physical activity per week is beneficial for heart health.

After eight years of research, it became clear that people who sat, lay down or rested for 10.6 hours or more every day had a negative impact on their heart health. The study found that people who sat for 10.6 hours or more had a 40% higher risk of heart attack and death from cardiovascular disease. These people had a 54% higher risk of cardiovascular death.

Study coauthor and cardiologist Dr. Shan Khurshid explains that our findings indicate that if you sit for more than 10.6 hours every day, it can be dangerous for the heart, even if you are physically active. Why not? The study also reported that the negative effects of prolonged sitting were somewhat reduced for those who participated in physical activity, but those who sat for more than 10.6 hours still had an increased risk of heart disease and The risk of heart attack was increased.

People who did more than 150 minutes of physical activity a week also had a 15% higher risk of heart attack, and a 33% increased risk of dying from heart disease. It is better that we can avoid this problem by making some easy changes in our daily routine. If you reduce your sitting time a little every day, you can take care of your heart.
