Eating jaggery in winter keeps the digestion process healthy. Nutritionist Riddhi Khanna says, “Apart from improving digestion, it also solves all types of stomach related problems in a better way.” Potassium, antioxidants, phosphorus, zinc and iron present in jaggery work to increase the ability to protect against diseases.
It is said to be especially beneficial for women. “It is so beneficial that it protects women from anemia,” says Khanna. Along with this, it also protects you from seasonal diseases. It also helps in removing the tiredness that occurs during the day.
He said that jaggery can be included in your diet by making laddus, chikki and sesame laddus. Along with this, it can also be taken with food.
On whether diabetic patients can consume jaggery or not, nutritionist Riddhi Khanna said, “The answer to this question is that if a person has diabetes, then that person should not include sugar, jaggery, sugar nor honey in his diet.” Should be included in the diet. This is because the problem in diabetes is not in the sugar but in the glucose level.
Adding, “Most of the foods we eat these days contain glucose, but there are some foods that contain very simple carbohydrates, which have a high glycemic index. So the best way is to check what you can and cannot eat by looking at the glycemic index of that food item.”
He said, “Glycemic index tells how fast a food will increase the glucose level in the body. For example, the glycemic index of jaggery is 84.4, so diabetic patients should not eat it.
