According to experts, people who have type 2 diabetes are at the highest risk of developing dementia. Insulin does not work on type 2 diabetes, due to which the level of glucose in our blood increases. Increased glucose damages brain cells. Due to which the risk of dementia increases in a person who is suffering from type 2 diabetes. For this reason, people who are suffering from this disease have an increased risk of stroke as well as cardiovascular problems. Both these conditions affect the health of the brain, which increases the risk of dementia.
Type 2 diabetes can also cause inflammation in our brain, which helps encourage the development of dementia. Type 2 diabetes can cause the brain to lack adequate oxygen, which weakens brain cells. Some research has also found that diabetes can increase the accumulation of amyloid protein in the brain, which is associated with symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
